doctor's visits

  • Check in with your doctor when you are well to understand the pattern of your asthma, what triggers it and how to keep it under control. If you only ever see your doctor when your asthma is out of control you will always be on the back foot.

Written asthma plans are important

A written self management plan is a great way to help you manage your asthma. The plan can help indicate when your asthma is under control, getting worse, becoming severe or when you are experiencing an asthma emergency. The plan also tells you what to do as your asthma becomes better or worse.

The Asthma Foundation supplies printed Self Management Plans with spaces to add your treatment details and peak flow levels. You and your doctor can fill in the spaces to create a plan that suits you. Research shows that people with asthma who follow their self management plans manage their condition better than people who don't.

Here are the Asthma Foundation's adult and child self management plans. Ask your doctor for your own personalised management plan today.

Once you have a management plan, make copies for your whanau, friends, or school, so that everyone knows what to do if you have an asthma emergency.
