2. The Foundation will support ethical research which is being conducted for the public good, and with a focus on their primary constituency.
4. Priority will be given to research initiatives which focus on asthma, COPD and bronchiectasis as well as other respiratory conditions which affect New Zealanders, both children and adults.
5. Priority will be given to research initiatives which recognise the particular respiratory health needs of Maori in New Zealand.
7. Consideration will be given to funding an individual rather than a project with a view to advancing their research experience. This would be a grant-in-aid towards such items as travel, living expenses etc. which are to be incurred in relation to a research project but which are not otherwise covered. A clear outline of the proposed research, with justification and timelines is required. The proposed work must be seen to advance the research aims and objectives of the Board and be consistent with its Research Policy. Such an award will not be renewable.
8. Consideration will be given to a co-funding arrangement involving other grant-awarding bodies.
9. Proposals may be submitted by anyone with a suitable academic and professional background. Disciplines may include community health, primary care, nursing, medicine surgery and therapeutics, environmental medicine and psychology.
10. Research funds will be disbursed at the discretion of the Asthma Foundation's Board, as advised by the Medical Adviser, and are subject to appropriate mechanisms of academic scrutiny and financial accountability.
11. The Foundation will not fund the institutional overhead costs of a research project.
While this area of Maori health has been highlighted, proposals which focus on other areas of research will be welcome and will be considered.

Occasionally, applicants may be invited to address comments raised by the reviewers including suggested changes to the study design. The applications and the reviewers’ assessments will be referred to the full Asthma Foundation Board, which will make the final decision on funding.
In addition, other applications may be considered further by the Board if, at the discretion of the Board, they are of outstanding merit because the proposal is in a key area of interest to the Asthma Foundation.
